Also have a couple desktop hard drives for archiving that have USB3.0 and are “brick powered”. The boot drive is SSD but the others are HDs. I use a powered 6-port charger for stuff like that.
For things like charging phones and tablets, USB 3 is a waste, IMHO. Occasionally there is a second small bus-powered drive attached. The attached drives are mostly AC powered, except for one 2.5” bus powered drive that is always hooked up. My Sonnet card, which I bought on eBay, works with all of the installed OSes.

However, the Yosemite driver has since disappeared from CalDigit’s website. My CalDigit card does not work with El Cap, but does work with Snow Leopard, Mavericks, Yosemite and Sierra. I have been using a utility called Mountain (from ) to control it. On my 2010 Mac Pro, it never occurs in Snow Leopard but does occur with every later OS that I am using. Note: I don’t like putting drivers or other stuff on my machine that isn’t vetted by Apple and, from what I can tell, these two cards don’t seem to be vetted so it looks like I’ll be stuck with something I don’t like.
